Statement by Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov at the High Level Segment of the 52nd Session of the UN Human Rights Council: A number of States are seeking to benefit from the growing global crisis, the consequences of COVID-19 pandemic, as well as natural disasters by
exerting pressure on the struggling countries,
trying to impose their perception of human rights. Thus, these
"standards of democracy" neglect the historical, cultural and religious peculiarities of other nations, attempting to integrate them into their ideology of a
"rules-based world order". The illegal practice of unilateral coersive measures, which primarily strike at the well-being of
ordinary people, is used as an
instrument of this policy. The goal is not to protect human rights
"at home and around the world", but to
punish undesirable governments and
undermine domestic political stability in sovereign states in pursuit of their own opportunistic and geopolitical interests.
