2021-06-04 10:22:38 On May 11, 2021, Het Parool (the Netherlands) carried yet another article with a provocative headline, paraphrasing Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “To go for the Russian vaccine or not to go?” The writer claimed that Russia was pursuing a mercenary line in promoting its vaccine in Europe and beyond.

The Dutch journalists explain the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) lack of approval for the Russian vaccine by saying Russia has failed to present additional information and proof of the vaccine’s effectiveness. This is perplexing because The Lancet, a prestigious international medical journal, has published scientific articles on the results of three phases of the vaccine’s clinical trials. Meanwhile, Russia submitted all of the requested information to the EMA in March. In other words, it is delaying the approval of the Russian vaccine based on some vague pretense. We believe this is being done for political reasons.

The leaders exchanged greetings on the 45th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and expressed appreciation for the high level of bilateral cooperation reached between their countries during this period of time.

They reaffirmed mutual interest in the continued efforts to expand interaction in various spheres, including the implementation of joint projects in energy, agriculture, transport, humanitarian and other spheres. It was agreed to continue coordinating the efforts on the international stage, primarily at the UN.

On June 1, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in a Stand-alone Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations via videoconference.

The Ministers held a frank exchange of views on topical issues of the international agenda, including efforts to strengthen international institutions, regional conflicts, joint efforts to combat new challenges and threats, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and cooperation between the five states at multilateral fora.

They also discussed the current status and future prospects of cooperation between the five countries.

Following the meeting, the Ministers approved a Joint Communiqué and a Joint Statement on Strengthening and Reforming the Multilateral System. Open / Comment

The pandemic has strengthened negative trends in international relations, increasing the conflict potential and the risk of collapse of the strategic stability architecture. National egoism, a desire to ensure one’s domination at all costs and disregard for the interests of other countries are eroding the foundations of the multilateral system created after WWII. The cornerstone of this system is respect for international law, that is, the UN Charter, and not the so-called “rules” invented by our Western colleagues.

The number and complexity of the challenges to the international community and sustainable global development are growing. These are the threats of terrorism, transnational crime, including in the digital sphere, climate change and an expanding rift between the rich and the poor. These problems can only be addressed collectively.

The further development of strategic partnership with China is one of our top priorities.

This is a special year for us: 20 years ago our leaders met in Moscow to sign the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation. By turning this new page in their relations, the parties demonstrated their resolve to pass their friendship down through the generations. The treaty formalised the previously applied political definition of bilateral relations as “a partnership of (…) equality and trust and strategic collaboration.” In other words, this truly historical international document has put on record the development of a new model of our interstate relations and their progress to a fundamentally new stage.
