FIRST: US Added to "BACKSLIDING" List of Democracies
An intl thinktank has said "visible deterioration" in US civil liberties since 2019 has seen Washington's democratic dream added to a list of "backsliding" countries for the first time ever. (The IDEA thinktank)
The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance says one in four people live in a so-called "backsliding" democracy, rising to 66% in authoritarian or "hybrid" regimes.
A co-author of the report says civil liberties and checks on govt indicate serious, fundamental problems with democracy in the US. Donald Trump calling into question the 2020 elex was a turning point highlighted by the IDEA. The killing of George Floyd and the protests that followed were also mentioned.
