Centrelia is a ghost town, aka "Silent Hill".
The main activity of the locals was the coal and anthracite industry. The existence of coal mining lasted until the 1960s. But then most of the companies went out of business
After the mines were emptied, some pits were used to burn garbage. One day something went wrong...
Firefighters couldn't deal with the fire, which rapidly began to spread through the tunnels.
For an entire year, the authorities tried to cover up the fire, which was still burning. In 1963, they turned to the Mine Safety and Health Administration. There were plans to build a tunnel to get the fire out, but the project was not covered by the administration. The city was left alone with an unextinguished fire.
