The Mystery of the Cemetery of Chaucilla, Peru

The last burials here were made about 100 years ago. Like most people in the world, Peruvians buried their bodies in the ground - their graves looked like shallow wells. The walls were lined with stones and covered with clay.

The dead person would be seated in a small room. The Peruvians squatted their dead in the graves and wrapped them in a linen cloth soaked in resin. The material adhered tightly to the skin and wrapped the body in a shroud impervious to germs. Thanks to this method of mummification, all the dead people were surprisingly well preserved, and the Chowchilla cemetery is more than a thousand years old.

Scientists have found that people were buried here in the IX century. Many 700-year-old bodies still have patches of skin, and the heads of the deceased are decorated with thick, shiny hair.
