2021-04-14 04:15:33 Bursa market outlook: *Below its 50-day EMA*

Asian bourses were little changed yesterday but the local benchmark FBMKLCI (KLCI) closed 10.71pts or 0.67% lower to end the day at 1,597.71. Most sectors succumbed to profit taking again with healthcare (-1.21%) and telecommunications (-1.06%) taking the largest hit. Only construction (+0.07%) and technology (+0.19%) bucking the trend. Market breadth stayed negative for its third day with 740 losers beating 328 gainers. Trading volume rose to 6.35bn (5.83bn previously) but trading value fell to RM3.05bn (RM3.35bn previously).

The general trend for the market remains in a sideways trend with the index trading close to the mid-point of the 1,560-1,640 range. The benchmark tested the resistance trend line from the 1,695 highs on Friday and formed a hanging man pattern. This pattern was followed by a couple of negative candles on Monday and Tuesday and the benchmark is now back below the 1,600 psychological level and its 50-day EMA (1,599). More weakness may follow next with minor support seen at 1,588 and 1,573-1,575. Strong overhead resistance is seen at 1,618-1,625. Our portfolio is now in *risk-on mode* following last Friday’s strong close above the 1,601 levels. The 1,601 level is key at this Friday’s close (16th Apr) once more. We have mentioned this warning before - when the market goes into a sideways trend, the portfolio may potentially swing from risk-on to risk-off and back to risk-on again. It is one of the pitfalls for a trend-following strategy.

FBM KLCI: 1,597.71 pts (-10.71pts, -0.67%)
The FBM KLCI (-0.7%) slipped below the 1,600 psychological level with only one-sixth of the index-linked heavyweights ending in the positive region. Market breadth remained negative as losers thumped the gainers on a ratio of 7-to-3. The healthcare sector was the biggest decliner on the negative broader market, dragged by the weakness in HARTA (-24.0 sen), TOPGLOV (-17.0 sen), and SUPERMX (-12.0 sen) due to the extended selling in the glove counters.

2021-04-06 03:52:17 Bursa market outlook: *Another shooting star*

Most of the regional bourses that were opened yesterday closed mixed. The local benchmark FBMKLCI (KLCI) was on the losing side, shedding 1.11pts or 0.07% to end the day at 1,584.24. Sectors were mostly positive except for healthcare (-0.55%), energy (-0.40%) and plantation (-0.20%). The largest gainer was construction (+2.24%) following the announcements of the MRT3 being back on track. Trading volume climb to 7.84bn (from 6.62bn previously) but trading value eased a tad to RM2.80bn (from RM2.92bn previously). Market breadth stayed marginally positive, its third positive A/D ratio despite the weaker market overall.

There is no change in our short term view. We expect a tad more sideways movements in the near term. The formation of a shooting star pattern yesterday may warn that a minor top may be in place and some weakness may take place ahead. Resistance is seen at 1,600-1,610 while support is at 1,573 (the 200-day EMA) and 1,557. Our portfolio is still in risk-off mode at the moment.

*BUY, new SOP TP of MYR1.02 from MYR1.23 (24% upside)*. We turn conservative and imputed lower earnings for the environment division. Albeit that, we continue to like Ranhill Utilities for its attractive c. *4% dividend yield* in a low interest rate environment, with potential rerating catalysts stemming from the extension of Ranhill Powertron I (RPI), Kedah-Thailand cross-border electricity sales, higher than-expected rate hikes for its Johor water operations, and project wins relating to water and renewable energy.
