Frigatebirds perform an elaborate ritual when courting. Males inflate a large red pouch under their beaks called a gular sac.

They inflate their pouch, rattle their bill, and drum against the pouch while sitting on tree branches, watching eligible females flying by.

Once a female chooses a potential mate, she will land beside him, and the pair perform an elaborate head and neck dance.

The magical Kalaloch Tree of Life in Olympic National Park, Washington!

This ancient Sitka Spruce has been standing tall for centuries, despite the harsh coastal conditions. The tree’s roots are exposed due to erosion caused by the crashing waves, giving it a unique and striking appearance. The Kalaloch Tree of Life truly is a symbol of the resilience of nature and the enduring power of life.

But there’s more to discover in Olympic National Park! From the wildflower-filled meadows to the glacier-carved valleys, the park boasts a diverse range of natural wonders.

Did you know caterpillars have two different kinds of legs?

They have true legs, which are retained through metamorphosis and will transform into the legs of the adult moth or butterfly, and they also have prolegs, which are only present during the larval stage. You can see the prolegs in action in the first video. Each nubby proleg is lined with extra grippy barb-like structures called crochets that keep the caterpillar securely anchored to whatever surface it’s traversing. In the second video you can see the pointy true legs, which really accentuate their manical plotting tendencies.

The waters off the coast of Ireland are home to the gentle giants of the sea Basking Sharks, the second-largest fish in the world, can often be spotted cruising along the surface, filtering plankton from the water.

These magnificent creatures may look intimidating, but they pose no threat to humans and are actually quite docile. If you’re lucky enough to encounter a basking shark in the wild, take a moment to appreciate their grace and beauty.
