2023-06-04 17:49:18 The Ottomans extended their demands to include Tiflis as well as Alexandropol and Echmiadzin; they also wanted a railroad to be built to connect Kars and Julfa with Baku. The new Armenian state, through which the transport corridor would run, was to give free right of passage. Armenia's first PM Hovhannes Kachaznuni was convinced that Armenia must fulfill the provisions of that agreement and maintain inter-state relations with Ottomans. But General Andranik refused to accept the humiliating Treaty of Batum. Andranik continued resistance with the intention of declaring a new Armenian state to be called the Republic of Mountainous Armenia. During 1918, Andranik's activities were concentrated in the Karabakh-Zangezur (Artsakh-Syunik) area. However, the Armenian government left alone had exhausted the possibilities of resistance and had no choice but to make peace, despite its humiliating conditions, would give them a minimum respite, hoping that the World War would end soon and Allied victory would bring justice to their cause. On June 4, 1918, the Treaty of Batum was signed between the #Ottoman_Empire and the three Transcaucasian states - #Armenia, #Georgia, and #Azerbaijan. A German diplomat made the following comment: "Turks gave space to Armenians to swim in (lake) Sevan but they didn't give them space to come out and get dried."
The treaty was signed while the Ottoman Third Army held positions 7 km from the capital Yerevan and only 10 km from the Holy City of Echmiadzin. In the surrendered territories the majority of the 1,250,000 pre-war inhabitants had been Armenians (many refugees from the #ArmenianGenocide who escaped from #WesternArmenia), with more than 400,000 in the ceded sector of Yerevan province alone. The appointment of Ibrahim Kalin as head of the National Intelligence Organisation (MIT), as reported in the Turkish media, will not change Turkey's lines on sensitive security issues.
