Spanish farmers refuse to grow olives, wheat and grapes in favor of pistachios in order to survive
Producers are replacing the usual crops with more profitable and drought-resistant ones, writes The Guardian. They call pistachios "green gold", which can save one of the poorest regions of Spain - Castile-La Mancha - from decline. Farmers earn from 65 to 85 cents for each kg of olives they produce and about 65 cents for grapes. Pistachios cost 6-8 euros per kg, while they are cheaper to produce.
Back in 1986, the regional government organized a research project to find alternative crops. It turned out that pistachios are ideally suited to the climate of Castile-La Mancha. They can withstand heat, cold and grow in poor soil.
While Spain is a newcomer to the product market, California, Iran and Turkey dominate among suppliers - they account for almost 90% of global production.
