Efficacy of tocilizumab in the treatment of COVID-19: An umbrella review

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

The aim of this umbrella review was to determine the efficacy of tocilizumab in treating COVID-19, and to provide an overview of all systematic reviews on this topic.

Tocilizumab treatment reduced the risk of intubation, mortality and the length of hospital stay, without increasing the risk of superimposed infections in COVID-19 patients. Therefore, tocilizumab can be considered an effective therapeutic agent for treating patients with COVID-19.

Aging, testosterone, and neuroplasticity: friend or foe?

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

In the present review, we discuss the influence of environmental factors, aging, and gender on testosterone-associated alterations in neuroplasticity, as well as the two-sided actions of testosterone in the nervous system. Finally, we provide practical insights for further study of pharmacological treatments for hormonal disorders focusing on restoring neuroplasticity.

Hesperetin as an anti-SARS-CoV-2 agent can inhibit COVID-19-associated cancer progression by suppressing intracellular signaling pathways

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

Hesperetin, an aglycone metabolite of hesperidin with high bioavailability, recently gained attention due to its anti-COVID-19 and anti-cancer properties.

This study proposes that hesperetin not only can be used as an anti-COVID-19 agent but also can reduce the risk of multiple cancer progression by suppressing several intracellular signaling pathways in cancer patients with COVID-19.

In this review, we attempted to provide evidence demonstrating anti-COVID-19/cancer properties of hesperetin with several mechanisms.

Elevated neopterin in tuberculosis and co-infection with HIV and the effect of treatment: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

Meta-analysis showed higher blood NEO levels in patients with active TB than healthy controls, with a large effect size of 1.99.

Meta-analysis showed higher blood NEO levels in patients with TB before ATT than after ATT, with moderate effect sizes of 1.13 to 1.46.

Urinary NEO might help diagnosis and disease extent evaluation of PTB.

Pleural NEO can help differentiate TB-induced effusion from malignancy-induced effusion.

Blood NEO might indicate the diagnosis of PTB and its co-infection with HIV and assist in monitoring disease activity during treatment.
