2021-05-23 18:42:14 Initially Kurt and Krist disliked the tight-knit Seattle scene; at first glance it resembled the exclusive cliques which they had found in high school. "I just found the whole Seattle scene so incestuously small and cliquey and everyone knew each other and seemed so stuck up, like they had seen it all," says Kurt. He had finally escaped the abysmal Aberdeen and escaped to the promise land of Seattle only to find the same situation all over again. No wonder the refrain of School, "You're in high school again", sounds so desperate. When Kurt came up with the basic riff for the song it sounded so much like a typical Sub pop grunge-rock riff to them that they considered calling the song "The Seattle Scene" - "We wrote it about Sub Pop" says Kurt. "It was a joke at first, but then it turned out to be a really good song"

در ابتدا کرت و کریست از فضای بسیار صمیمی سیاتل بیزار بودند. در نگاه اول، همانند دسته‌‌های خاصی بود که در دبیرستان پیدا کرده بودند. کرت می گوید: "من تمام فضای سیاتل را بسیار کوچک و گنگ ‌مانند دیدم و همه یکدیگر را می شناختند و به نظر می‌رسید خیلی سر جایشان گیر كرده‌اند. انگار که دیگر همه چیز را دیده‌اند." او سرانجام از آبردین رقت‌انگیز به سیاتل، سرزمین موعود، فرار کرد تا دوباره با همان وضعیت مشابه رو به رو شود. جای تعجب نیست که جمله پر تکرار در آهنگ School، "شما دوباره در دبیرستان هستید" ، بسیار ناامید کننده به نظر می رسد. هنگامی که کرت با ریف پایه برای آهنگ روبرو شد، این صدا برای آنها کاملاً شبیه یک ریف عادی ساب پاپ گرانج-راک بود.
به همین دلیل، آنها فکر کردند این آهنگ را "The Seattle Scene" بخوانند.
کرت می‌گوید: “ما آن را درباره Sub Pop نوشتیم. در ابتدا یک شوخی بود، اما بعد از آن معلوم شد که آهنگ بسیار خوبی است."
