Durian lovers – have you seen this red durian before?
With its scarlet red husk and glossy black seeds with a bright orange aril, it’s hard to believe this exotic-looking fruit is from a plant native to Singapore! The Squirrel Durian (
Durio griffithii) is unfortunately inedible to humans and is naturally dispersed by small mammals and birds. The tree can grow up to 18m tall and bears pale yellow-white flowers that turn orange.
Interested to find out more about other types of durians? Stop by the The King of Fruits: Ethnobotany and Diversity of the Durians exhibition at the Singapore Botanic Gardens before it ends on 29 May!
