Market traders are commonly called bulls and bears, depending on what strategy they are pursuing.

Traders who purchase long-term positions in anticipation of their price growth are called ‘bulls’.

Traders who open short sales, selling financial instruments that they do not own at that time (a loan of the underlying asset is provided by the broker), are called ‘bears’.
