Some beta male sea otters will kidnap pups when their mother is diving for food, and hold them for ransom.

The beta will hold the pup’s head under water until the mother will bring him food to save her child’s life.

A Giant Otter’s chest markings function as it’s nametag.

They will ‘periscope’ out of the water when meeting eachother, to show their unique markings.

In a fight, male otters are known to use their strong jaws to shatter their opponents baculum (penis bone).

A sea otter grooms for around 2 ½ hours a day.

It pushes out the water from it's fur then blows into it. (Sea otter trainers describe it as a "phhh, phhh, phhh" sound).

At the same time the otter's oil glands coat the strands of fur, making them waterproof.

A Giant otter can chomp down with the force of 414.6 Newtons, a bite that's stronger than that of a snow leopard's.

An otter's tail is one of it's most important assets. It uses it to steer and propel itself forward when underwater.

Thus the tail is a strong muscle on every otter species except sea otters, their tail is much less muscular compared to their river counterparts.

King Otter - also known as Dobhar-Chu in Irish folklore - is a 2m long creature believed to be a cross between an otter and a hound.

They supposedly hunt in pairs and when one of them is killed it lets off an eerie whistling sound which alerts its mate, who then attacks from the depths, revenging his friend.

Otters are thought to be able to smell underwater by exhaling bubbles and sniffing them back in.

Today is World Otter Day!

In this day we want to raise awareness of the conservation of our otterly based frens and their habitats.

Habitat destruction and otter trafficking (asian small-clawed otters mainly) are on the rise, poachers catch baby otters when they are so young so they can be easily smuggled, some of them die during the travels or their mothers die when trying to escape or defend their pups from poachers.

Otters belong only to nature, so when we help nature we are helping otters too. If you want to see otters, do a hike to your nearest ott-spot or make a special travel if you don't have one next to you, never go to otter cafes, buy clothes made with otter fur or buy one as a pet.
Also, when we go to forests and rivers our duty is leaving the place in a better condition than when we arrived.

Remove trash or search for poisoned foods or traps that could harm animals, we can do this and more for nature. And for otters too!

Happy World Otter Day!
