Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has proposed legislation banning the sale or import of handguns, claiming "the fewer guns in our communities, the safer everyone will be."

Although 1,500 military or assault rifles were banned after the country’s worst mass shooting in 2020, Trudeau acknowledged gun crime is on the rise despite govt data showing less than 3% of violent crimes in Canada are firearm related.

White House medical adviser Dr Anthony Fauci has said the US is going to be dealing with Covid “on a chronic basis” and that it’s “entirely conceivable” yearly booster shots will be required.

The Russian gas embargo will not be in the seventh package of sanctions according to Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who added that German counterpart Olaf Scholz will refuse to discuss it.

Although Nehammer added that it is easier to replace Russian oil, the EU has had to make concessions to its original unilateral oil embargo plans after fierce opposition from Hungary in particular.

Nehammer’s statement comes as the Netherlands becomes the fourth EU nation to have Russian gas supplies cut by Gazprom after state wholesaler GasTerra refused to make ruble payments for April.

NBA superstar Kyrie Irving is among several basketball players to have called for the release of Brittney Griner from a Russian prison on her 100th day of detention after she was arrested for possession of drugs at an airport close to Moscow.
