On the eve of the Second World War, the British government launched a propaganda campaign encouraging people have their pets killed after whipping up hysteria about it being the kindest thing to do once gas attacks and food shortages started.
In the first week of the war, over 750,000 cats and dogs were slaughtered in London alone. Zoos up and down the country had their animals executed, from polar bears to lions. Millions of animals had been killed across the UK leading to untold heartbreak, and then resentment towards the British government for convincing people that this sick policy was even necessary.
In contrast, Germany enjoyed the best animal rights laws in the world.
