Is it just me or do rich people struggle to empathise with those who are less well off?
I was thinking about this when I saw a comment from a British Conservative politician claim in Parliament that poor people struggling with the cost of living crisis needed to learn to cook.
I have an ex boyfriend who was rich and when we were together, I was shocked at how normal he thought he was. He thought it was normal to receive a luxury car as an 18th birthday, costing the average annual income in the UK at the time. He was private schooled and thought this was normal even though 93% of school kids in the UK are not privately educated. He was studying science and so understood statistics, but was clueless about basic economic realities.
I have a friend knows that I grew up poor and will frequently send me photos of watches and expensive luxury purchases he thinks are normal. He's otherwise a lovely person but he comes across as so out of touch sometimes, even though I've brought this up numerous times.
In short, it just seems like rich people don't understand what reality is like for the vast majority of people in society. I struggle to understand how this is possible when you are surrounded by news and real life evidence of people struggling. Rich people I know don't volunteer and are less likely to donate to charity. Is it simply an inherent lack of empathy for those worse off?
