Taiwanese President Lai Jing-te on Monday asked China to stop its military and political threats, saying in his inaugural speech that peace is the only choice and that Beijing should respect the Taiwanese people's choiceChina responded by saying that Lai was sending “dangerous signals” aimed at undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Lai, addressing a crowd outside the Japanese colonial-era presidential office in central Taipei, repeated his call for talks with China, which views the proudly democratic island as its own territory and has never been reluctant to use force to bring it under Beijing's control.
