I was going around tonight turning lights off. I had just one bathroom light still on in the whole house, essentially, and Wren was following me everywhere. As I went to turn off the last light, I made a quick U-Turn to go back and set the house alarm and mumbled to her something to the effect that I had forgotten to do that. I navigated my house effortlessly in the pitch black darkness. I had assumed Wren would stay in the light until I got back, but I realized fairly quickly she was behind me.
Then it struck me…
For a child, it is not about the “comfortable places” that are most appealing and assuring. For a child, it’s not even the darkness they are afraid of; that’s secondary. What a child fears the most is being without the One who brings them Peace. (Comfort/assurance/safety.)
Adults get it wrong. We trade being in the Presence of Peace Himself with the shallow and temporal comforts of the world. We will trade going through the valley of the shadow of death with God for something else because we look at the darkness rather than the One who’ll see us through it.
The Darkness isn’t what the CHILDREN of God (should) fear. We (should) fear being separated from the Prince of Peace. His presence, despite our circumstance, is all we need. That is childlike faith, and my daughter reminded me of this tonight
