Canada will punish crimes committed on the moon

More than 50 years ago, astronauts on the Apollo missions left 96 bags of miscellaneous trash on the surface of the moon. But back then, they didn't face a fine for littering in the wrong place, since space and the moon in particular are essentially lawless regions. Now Canada has decided to correct the situation.

The Criminal Code is going to be amended to prosecute crimes committed by Canadian astronauts during missions to the moon or on the surface of the satellite. Foreign astronauts who threaten the lives or safety of Canadian astronauts could also be punished under Canadian law.

The changes are related to the future Artemis mission, which will launch the first group of humans to the moon since the 1970s.
