Building inspectors to enforce bylaws

Government on Thursday (September 09) designated building inspectors as enforcement inspectors to enforce building bylaws across the province, according to news reports.

The Local Government & Community Development Department issued a notification to that effect under Section 283 read with Section 306 (2) of the Punjab Local Government Act, 2019. The enforcement inspectors can now launch legal action against ‘changing or converting of the building / premises / portion (commercial building) into any use other than the specified one already under the law and the approved plan’.

The selected officials will be given the authority to take action against the erection or re-erection of buildings that are too close to a setback, parking space, or building line, which are supposed to be left open by the rules. The nominated individual will be overseen by the local governments’ planning wing. According to sources familiar with the situation, the decision was made to properly execute rules that the government had been unable to enforce due to a lack of necessary staff. Once appointed, the officers will keep a check on the structures and verify that they are built and utilised in accordance with the original plan and intent of the construction, while also overseeing the inspection of the visible condition.
