In Ukraine's Kharkiv region, the Ukrainian military shows off equipment left behind by invading Russian troops. Some will be reused by the Ukraine's armed forces, while other pieces will be left where they are. Our Ukrainian service spoke to Mykhaylo, a Ukrainian serviceman, on March 30.

"If Russia wants to be a totalitarian state and become the Soviet Union, so be it. But they won't have us."

His mother died when their car hit a mine planted by Russian forces. Andriy, 15, and his mother, a cousin, and friends were trying to leave Chernihiv, a town north of Kyiv under heavy Russian shelling, after their house was destroyed.

Besides his mother, two other people died on the spot. Andriy survived with serious injuries and told his story to RFE/RL’s Ukrainian Service on March 29 at the hospital in the western city of Lviv where he is recovering.

The town of Irpin, northeast of the Ukrainian capital, was recently liberated by Ukrainian forces and has been reduced to an eerie wasteland of burned-out buildings, shattered vehicles, and bodies still lying in the streets. Ukrainian forces managed to drive out Russian troops who had occupied the Kyiv suburb. The town's mayor, Oleksandr Markushyn, said up to 300 civilians were killed in the fighting.

Ukrainian forces have regained control of the frontline town of Makariv in the Kyiv region, but Russian troops have not stopped trying to retake it.

Makariv may be small in size, but it has big strategic value as it blocks Russia's armed forces from encircling the capital.

As RFE/RL's Levko Stek reports, Ukrainian volunteer fighters use drones in the area for reconnaissance that can be used by Ukrainian artillery units to strike back.

2022-03-24 12:49:58 With Russia’s invasion slowed by Ukrainian resistance and its forces facing supply and logistical issues, the war in Ukraine could begin to see more urban warfare as military planners on both sides dig in for what many analysts say could be a long-term fight.

To better understand what this next phase of the war might look like, RFE/RL spoke with retired U.S. Special Forces Colonel Liam Collins, the executive director of the Madison Policy Forum who also advised the Ukrainian Defense Ministry on its military reforms.

As Russian forces continue to pound the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, an estimated 300,000 trapped residents are struggling to survive.

Food is running low and there is no running water or electricity in the besieged city, which been encircled by Russian forces.

People sheltering in cold basements took advantage of a break in the shelling to salvage items from their shattered homes and bury their dead.

Khrystyna works on a help line set up by the Ukrainian authorities to provide information to the families of Russian soldiers who are missing in action.

Their calls are heartbreaking pleas for help, often with an appeal for forgiveness.

In two of the calls, women in Ukraine were searching for their brothers in the invading Russian Army. One of them asked: "Is my brother fighting against me?"
