1929 - The first movie academy awards are presented in a ceremony that later becomes the Oscar awards.
1969 - The Soviet space probe Venera 5 reaches Venus. The probe sent read-outs every 45 seconds for 53 minutes before finally succumbing to the temperature and pressure. It confirmed the high temperatures, pressures, and carbon dioxide composition of the planet's atmosphere.
