1780 — Coat of Arms of St. Petersburg is finally confirmed by Empress Catherine II: "In the red field two overturned silver anchors, crosswise, and a golden scepter on them"
1804 — Napoleon Bonaparte is proclaimed Emperor of France by the French Senate
1899 — The First Hague Peace Conference opens. It came from a proposal on 24 August 1898 by Russian Tsar Nicholas II. Representatives of 26 states, including Great Britain, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan, took part in the forum.
1958 — Soviet movie "The Cranes Are Flying" directed by Mikhail Kalatozov wins the Palme d'Or at the XI Cannes Film Festival.
1991 — USSR launches two cosmonauts to Mir space station. One of them, Sergey Krikalev, would later be known as the last citizen of USSR: he returned to Earth when the state of USSR had already collapsed.
