This Day in History: June 18

24 years ago, in 1997, the First St. Petersburg International Economic Forum was opened.
The initiative to hold the forum belonged to the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS member states. This idea was supported by the President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin and the heads of state of the Commonwealth. More than 1.5 thousand people from 50 countries of the world took part in the work of the first forum.

Since then, SPIEF has become a leading global forum for discussing key economic issues facing Russia, emerging markets and the world at large. Every year the heads of state and government, heads of parliaments, leaders of international organizations, representatives of the political and business elite of dozens of countries of the world take part in the forum.
