The Oregon Department of Education recently encouraged teachers to register for training that encourages “ethnomathematics” and сlaimed white supremacy manifests itself in the focus on finding the right answer.
Is it because mathematical equations are written on ‘white’ boards?
According to ODE, white supremacy culture has infiltrated math classrooms through concepts such as ‘objectivity’ and the practice of ‘showing your work’ (i.e. demonstrating the path you took to get the answer you got).
To combat this burning injustice, ODE issued a toolkit which, among other things, suggests that teachers help students ‘identify and challenge the ways that #math is used to uphold capitalist, imperialist, and racist views.’
