US spy agency tasked hacker with stealing foreign diplomats’ data (reports)
Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad alleges that a hacker working on behalf of an unnamed US spy agency broke into Booking. com’s data involving foreign diplomats in the Middle East in 2016.
The hotel reservation site reportedly hired US investigators to probe a breach they had stumbled across and found links to a company with assignments from an American spy agency, although which one remains unclear.
Booking. com admitted they didn’t alert the Dutch data protection service at the time, under advice from a London-based law firm, as they weren’t legally obliged to on the basis that “no sensitive or financial information” was leaked.
