IOC: Trans athletes can compete with females without reducing testosterone

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has issued new guidelines for transgender women athletes – stating they should no longer need to reduce their levels of testosterone to compete in female categories, reversing a previous stance from 2015.

The new 10-point framework is set to be rolled out after this year’s Winter Olympics but will not be legally binding – with the burden on governing bodies across individual sports to determine their rules.

Some advocates argue that while the IOC's new guideline is intended for elite athletes, it could bolster the case of trans student athletes in their fight against state bills in the US. Ten states in America have enacted laws restricting trans students from participating in female school sports.
