June 23 marks
International Olympic Day, the day when the International Olympic Committee was established in 1894 after the first Olympic Congress in Paris supported the idea of resuming the tradition of Olympic Games.
Russia
stood at the origins of the modern Olympic Movement. Russian general and military teacher Andrey Butovsky was one of the 13 members of the first International Olympic Committee in 1894. Russian athletes preformed at Olympic Games starting in 1900, winning
top positions in the country team medal count.
President Vladimir Putin: Russia has been and remains committed to the traditional Olympic values. We oppose the
attempts to politicise sport or use it as a tool of coercion, unfair competition and discrimination. We reject the practice of “collective punishment” for acts perpetrated by individual people, which has recently become a frequent occurrence.
