The ancient city of Maira was once the capital of the Lycian people, it is located 1.5 kilometers from the modern city of Demre.
The main product in the region is tomatoes, and the flat land south of Maira is now filled with greenhouses. The town lies at the foot of a steep cliff, with ornate tombs carved into the rock and a ruined Byzantine castle high up, on top of the cliff. Above its ruins flies the Turkish flag. The impressive site boasts thick defensive walls, as well as a largely restored amphitheater and a tomb with 11 life-size figures painted on the interior walls. Large rocks with extensive carvings of animals and grotesque faces were scattered throughout the site.
