The most powerful explosion before the nuclear age occurred in the Canadian port of Halifax on December 6, 1917. The Norwegian ship Imo collided with the French military transport Montblanc, carrying 2,300 tons of trinitrophenol and more than two hundred tons of TNT, resulting in an explosion that almost completely destroyed the city. The explosion killed 2,000 people and injured 9,000. 1,600 buildings in the city were completely destroyed and 12,000 were severely damaged.
