John was walking along Granville Street yesterday, when he saw two men fighting. Since he was worried someone could get hurt, he called the police and reported the incident.

The highlighted text is called a dependent clause. It is a clause
because it contains a subject and a verb and it is dependent because it cannot stand on its own. The word ‘fighting’ in this clause is a verb form acting as an adjective. This clause can be
changed to “when he saw two men who were fighting”, but not to “when he saw two men were fighting”.
