#Israeli PM to ask #Biden not to withdraw #US forces from #Iraq and #Syrian

A senior Israeli official revealed that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett would have asked U.S. President Joe Biden not to withdraw his forces from Iraq and Syria.

The Israeli "Walla" website quoted the Israeli official saying that Bennett believes that this exit could serve Iran and enhance its presence in the region.

"The issue of US forces in Iraq is a critical issue," he noted.

According to the Israeli website, pressure has increased on the Iraqi government, both from Iran and its proxies, to expel U.S. forces from the country, since the assassination of the commander of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Qassem Soleimani, in January 2020.

The White House announced earlier that U.S. President Joe Biden's meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, which was scheduled to be held today evening.

2021-08-27 10:10:00 #Iranian presence in #DeirEzzor reinforced by appropriation of civilian property. #Syria

“Our house in Deir Ezzor city was taken over years ago by people from the countryside with the support of Iranian militias. We resorted to mediations to evict the occupiers out, but they ignored our calls and insisted on staying as if it was their own house.”

With these words, Shaher (a pseudonym) recounted to Enab Baladi what had happened to his family’s house located in a neighborhood close to the Syrian regime’s military security branch in Deir Ezzor, following the city’s re-take by the regime and its affiliated militias.

Shaher said that people who illegally appropriated empty houses in the city of Deir Ezzor expressed their refusal to leave unless after the return of original property owners, knowing that such a condition cannot be realized.

He told Enab Baladi, “My father passed away, and my mother is an old woman who cannot return to live by herself. As for me and my brothers, we live abroad, and we are wanted by the regime’s security services, making it difficult if not impossible for us to return home or hire a lawyer to claim back our rights.”

Shaher pointed out that some people took advantage of the city’s dire situations and the absence of many residents to buy real estate at low prices. Shaher’s family was exploited and blackmailed by parties close to Iran, who offered to buy the family’s house at a very cheap price.

2021-08-26 19:14:36 #Rebels begin evacuation from last bastion in southern #Syrian

Fifty rebels and their families were evacuated on Thursday from the last opposition bastion in southern Syria under a Russian-sponsored deal to avert a military showdown in the strategic border area with Jordan and Israel, witnesses, rebels and army sources said.

A contingent of Russian military police on Tuesday entered the enclave to impose a plan that allows the army to take it over, while offering safe passage to former rebels who oppose the deal to leave for opposition areas in northwest Syria.

2021-08-26 18:40:29 #Protests against #Turkish-backed local councils in northern #Syria expand over bad services

Areas under control of the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the northwestern countryside of Aleppo are struggling amid deteriorating basic services, including electricity, thus pushing dozens of angry citizens to protest and demand local councils assume their responsibilities in providing services to al-Bab and Azaz.

Dozens of protesters took to the streets of Azaz Aug. 23, condemning the deteriorating services and tough living conditions amid the long and repeated power cuts across neighborhoods. Protesters chanted against the local council in Azaz and its countryside and called on the council to resign. They also carried banners demanding improved services and living conditions, and they called on the local council to sack the Turkish company AK Energy that operates in the city due to the repeated power cuts in Azaz.

2021-08-26 18:25:19 #Turkish-backed #Syrian militias have cut down nearly 1.5 million trees, including 650,000 olive trees, in the past three years in the Syrian district of #Afrin, a region they have controlled since 2018, the Rûdaw news website reported, citing local sources.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Rûdaw that Faylaq al-Sham, the largest and one of the best disciplined and trained of the Turkish-backed armed factions in Syria, has been cutting down trees in Afrin.

According to the sources, a large majority of the trees taken down by the armed groups is being sold in a market they established, while some factions control the timber trade in border areas.

Agricultural engineer Hanif Reşit also told Rûdaw there were nearly 18 million olive trees in Afrin before the Turkish-backed armed groups took control of the region.

“Nearly 700,000 trees have been felled in the region within the past three years right in front of Turkish soldiers, 650,000 of which were olive trees. In fact, these groups have inflicted great damage on the region,” Reşit said.

Turkey and its Syrian proxies in January 2018 conducted a cross-border military excursion into Afrin called “Operation Olive Branch” in an effort to dislodge Kurdish fighters affiliated with the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the main element within the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Turkish government views the YPG and SDF as extensions of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

Western governments and international rights groups have accused Turkish-backed militias of war crimes, including looting and stealing civilian properties in Afrin.

Experts have said Afrin’s olive orchards have become a main source of revenue for the various armed groups present in the region.

Claims that Turkey, the third-largest exporter of olive oil to the European Union after Tunisia and Morocco, is exploiting Afrin for economic gain were also voiced by Turkey’s opposition politicians.

It has been more than three years since the operation, and Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government claims that over this period it has processed the olives in facilities in Turkey, exported the products to other countries and distributed the revenue to farmers in Afrin.

Contrary to the declarations made by the AKP, the opposition has alleged that the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) was confiscating Afrin farmers’ olives and bringing them to Turkey and that the revenue generated by the processing and export of the olives went to covering the FSA’s expenses.

The opposition also alleges that most of the farmers in Afrin fled due to the conflict and are now refugees in other countries.

2021-08-25 23:21:44 #Syrian #opposition #forces have begun to leave the southern province of #Daraa following the implementation of a #Russia-brokered truce deal.

Daraa was recaptured by the Syrian government in 2018 but attempts to impose the state's control over the Daraa al-Balad district provoked a pushback from armed rebels.

There have been clashes - including artillery exchanges - between the two sides since late July. These have been the biggest challenge yet to the Russia-brokered deal that returned Daraa province to government control but allowed rebels to stay on in some areas.

But on Tuesday, opposition fighters boarded buses to take them to rebel-held territory in the north, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, suggesting talks had succeeded.

These evacuations are a key part of the ceasefire accord that also calls on opposition fighters who stay in the province to hand over their weapons.

2021-08-25 17:20:54 A massive oil spill caused by leakage from a power plant inside one of Syria’s #oil refineries is spreading along the coast of the Mediterranean country, #Syria’s state news agency said and satellite photos showed Wednesday.

SANA said the spill reached the coastal town of Jableh, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the refinery in the town of Baniyas, adding that Syria’s environment department and the municipality of the coastal province of Latakia have placed all concerned departments on alert. It said work is underway to clean the coast in the rocky areas.

A day earlier, Syria’s government said that maintenance teams at Baniyas Thermal Station had brought a fuel leakage from one of the tanks under control.

Satellite images from Planet Labs Inc. on Wednesday showed what appeared to be a massive oil spill stretching out over 25.5 square kilometers. An image from Monday showed no sign of the slick, suggesting whatever happened to cause the spill happened later.

The head of the Electricity Workers Syndicate at Tartous Workers Union, Dawoud Darwish, blamed cracks in one of the fuel tanks at the thermal station. He pointed out that the tank was filled with 15,000 tons of fuel.

Syria’s oil resources are mostly outside of government-controlled areas but its two refineries are under government control and operating. This makes #Damascus reliant on Iran for fuel, but #US Treasury sanctions have hindered the supply network, which spans Syria, #Iran, and #Russia.
