Hi SGN Community

Happy TGIF!

Did you know that the former House of Tan Teng Niah that was constructed in 1900 is the only Chinese villa that was preserved during the redevelopment of #LittleIndia?

It embodies an often overlooked story of the days when small Chinese industries operated alongside the cattle and rattan businesses at Little India. Tan Teng Niah was a towkay (Chinese businessman of good standing) who owned several sweet-making factories along Serangoon Road that used sugarcane to produce sweets.

Happy 57th Birthday Singapore!

From impressive displays on land, air and sea by the RSAF , to Singaporeans’ favourite fireworks and aerial segment by the Red Lions, we’re finally back to full capacity at the National Day Parade!

Held at the Floating Platform this year, the parade this year features an exciting lineup of performances by professionals and volunteers alike - giving tribute to our families, communities and unsung heroes who have made Singapore the safe and beautiful city and home we are today

Here’s to our little red dot, and to many more amazing years ahead of us!

Hi SGN Community

Happy TGIF!

Meet Gwendolyn Ong. After her family's pivotal move from Pasir Ris to Perth when she was 10, she had to quickly learn to suppress her Singaporean-ness and Chinese-ness to fit in at school.

Now based in Melbourne, she has followed in her dad's entrepreneurial footsteps, cofounding wine delivery service @joinwinebox and product studio @cultivateideas, which guides innovators through rapid experimentation to identify the right product to launch

Gwen shares her journey of coming into her own as a young adult, which has helped her to embrace her Singaporean roots, be proud of her heritage, and shed fears of others' opinions.

Read about her fond memories of Singapore and her newfound passion for recreating her favourite Singaporean food (with some FaceTime help from mum ).

2022-08-04 12:30:47 Apart from news, here are some recommendations from us:

Meet Mack and Tessa, the travel duo who will be leaving after spending 8 years in . This heartwarming video is their love letter to the uncles and aunties who’ve made them feel at home, and their interpretation of what gives Singapore its soul.

Also, YouTuber Ghib Ojisan invited Japanese expats to share unexpected experiences in . Some gems - disappointing wasabi and kopi served in ‘bags you put goldfish in’. Watch his video to uncover the rest.

Do you agree with them? What does home mean to you? Or what reminds you of home? Let us know!

Hi SGN Community

Happy Monday!

Fulfilling a dream of working overseas can be thrilling, but leaving your life in Singapore behind isn’t always easy...

For Diviya, moving to New York City last year has built up her courage and adaptability and made her appreciate her family more – especially mum's cooking! (We can relate )

Over the past year, she's learnt how to embrace her new life yet stay connected with loved ones, and she’s realised how – no matter how far she goes – home will always be Singapore

Read more about her adventures in NYC and her tips on living abroad, from managing safety to satisfying food cravings, featured in her letter to the Singaporean moving abroad. Meanwhile, if you have tips to share of your own, let us know in the comments below!

What if we told you you could recreate Bak Chor Mee-memories?

Author of recipe book Chicken & Rice, Singaporean Shu Han moved to London 12 years ago. Along the way, she found herself missing the flavours she grew up with; fast forward to today, she is now the founder of Rempapa Spice Co – selling Spice Pastes. This National Day, she shares with us one of her favourite local dishes – Bak Chor mee, together with a recipe to recreate it from wherever you are in the world.

If this was one of your comfort foods, give the recipe a try and let us know how it goes!
