Residents of Hermanus were asked by local authorities not to eat the whale meat they removed from a rotting whale carcass

The municipal manager said that law enforcers were unable to stop the crowds from chopping away at the Bryde's whale carcass.

The whale has been dead for several days before being washed ashore.

The seaside town of Hermanus is known as a whale watching hotspot from July to November.
