Taking a stroll by the ocean
While on a spacewalk outside the International Space Station, NASA's Tom Marshburn took this eye-catching photo of the Caribbean Sea from below the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency external experiment platform.
Marshburn, already a veteran of two spaceflights, started his latest the ISS stay on November 11, 2021 as part of six-month SpaceX Crew-3 mission. Marshburn is one of seven astronauts and cosmonauts currently living and working on the station.

Big hunk of failed Russian rocket crashes to Earth as space junk
A Russian Angara A5 rocket launches from Plesetsk Cosmodrome on the vehicle’s third demonstration mission on Dec. 27, 2021. The rocket, carrying a dummy payload, reached low Earth orbit, but an upper-stage engine failure prevented it from going higher as planned, according to media reports

NASA successfully deploys complex sunshield on James Webb Space TelescopeNASA’s next-generation James Webb Space Telescope has successfully deployed its sunshield — a critical feature the observatory will use to keep its instruments extra cold during the course of its mission. The unfurling of the sunshield marks the end of perhaps the most complicated deployment the observatory must pull off in order to properly function while in space.

China complains to UN after maneuvering its space station away from SpaceX Starlink satellitesThe country claims it had two close calls
China filed a complaint this month with the United Nations, arguing that it had to conduct evasive maneuvers of its space station to avoid potential collisions with two of SpaceX’s internet-beaming Starlink satellites. The country is requesting that the UN’s Secretary General remind countries of their obligations under international space law, though China did not specify exactly what actions it wants to be taken.

Closing out the year with a bang
The Hubble Space Telescope space telescope captured a side-on view of a barred spiral galaxy roughly 57 million light-years from the Milky Way in the constellation Centaurus.
In 2014, a sudden flare of light caused by the explosion accompanying the death of a massive star in our galaxy was discovered by amateur astronomers who are part of the Backyard Observatory Supernova Search in New Zealand.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope launched Dec. 25 at 7:20 a.m. EST on an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, on the northeastern coast of South America. Webb, a partnership with the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency, will explore every phase of cosmic history – from within our solar system to the most distant observable galaxies in the early universe.

What To Expect From NASA's James Webb Space Telescope Launch
On Christmas Day, NASA is gifting astronomers one of the greatest presents it can give by launching the most powerful space telescope ever created. Called the James Webb Space Telescope, or JWST, the space observatory is meant to be the successor to NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope already in orbit around Earth. And it promises to completely transform the way we study the cosmos.
Sporting the biggest mirror of any space-bound telescope ever launched, JWST is tasked with collecting infrared light from some of the most distant stars and galaxies in the Universe. With this capability, the telescope will be able to peer far back in time, imaging some of the earliest objects to have formed just after the Big Bang. On top of that, it will unravel the mysteries of supermassive black holes, distant alien worlds, stellar explosions, dark matter, and more.

Spot the stellar snowflakes on the cosmic Christmas tree
About 2,500 light-years from Earth, stars are being born in a region of space known as the Christmas Tree Cluster. Seen in the infrared (just beyond the range of visible light) by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, these infant stars (less than 100,000 years old) appear as pink and red specks near the center of this photo, evenly-spaced in a spoke-like pattern that gives them the name of the Snowflake Cluster.
