Whoa! This alien-looking flower is an earthstar fungus (Geastrum triplex), a widespread species you might find in the detritus of hardwood forests all over Earth.

The rounded thing in the middle is its spore sac, exposed by the outer layer of tissue as the fungus matures; it contains a mass of spores the fungus can discharge to reproduce - once they land in favorable conditions, they may germinate to grow new earthstars. While the fungus is not poisonous, it is considered inedible (although it does have medicinal uses in some indigenous cultures).

2021-08-27 06:57:34 Testing complete

The James Webb Space Telescope has completed its rigorous testing regimen at Northrop Grumman, where it successfully demonstrated that it can survive launch conditions and a space environment. Logistics and engineering teams will soon begin preparations to ship the observatory to its launch site of Kourou, French Guiana in South America.

This marks a major turning point for the mission. With integration and testing formally concluded for Webb, NASA’s next giant leap into the cosmic unknown will soon be underway.
