Canada will impose sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the Russian Chief of Staff, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. He admitted, however, that the sanctions would have limited impact, as Putin "doesn’t have much if anything in terms of personal holdings in Canada.”
Trudeau said Canada supports removing Russia from SWIFT and said Ottawa would also impose new sanctions on Belarus and its leaders, targeting 57 individuals.
