2021-02-23 06:38:51 The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) believes that metal fatigue could be behind the United Airlines Flight 328 engine failure.

According to NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt, two blades in the engine of the Boeing 777 plane broke, one of them fractured at the base where it meets the hub, while the second fractured about mid-way. The first blade caused “overload damage” to the second blade.

Sumwalt said investigators were going to use the so-called “beach marks” to determine how long the engine blades had suffered the fatigue prior to the Saturday incident in Colorado.

“A preliminary on-scene exam indicates damage consistent with metal fatigue,” Sumwalt said, adding that the NTSB aims to get an understanding of “not only what happened, but why it happened, so that we can keep it from happening again.” Open / Comment
