Experts are warning that the 2023 hurricane season could be more active than average due to high ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, despite a likely El Niño formation which could balance out the risk. While favourable conditions for El Niño are present, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation is currently classified as neutral. Data shows that temperatures in zones relevant for hurricane formation, such as the MDR and Caribbean islands, have recently diverged most from their 20th-century average, reaching divergences of 0.78C and 0.85C in April 2023.
