When you think of coal usage, which countries do you immediately think of? Are you surprised to see Botswana at the top of the list?

In 2020, Botswana was named the country most reliant on coal, with the Southern African country almost exclusively using coal for electricity generation at 99.8% (According to data from Ember).

Second on the list is the small Balkan republic Kosovo, which registered 95% coal use for its electricity production. This follows a similar trend found in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe of which many countries feature in the top 10 of this list.

China, which has been touting its forays into renewable energy, is also still heavily banking on coal, at almost 61% of electricity created by the fossil fuel. China is also currently investing in several energy technologies – nuclear, coal and renewables – as their economies are expanding rapidly.
