Museum-Reserve "Kostromskaya Sloboda"

Let's return today to wooden architecture.

The Museum-Reserve "Kostromskaya Sloboda" was founded in 1955. Most of the museum exhibits are collected behind the wall of the male Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery, in a picturesque place where Kostroma flows into the Volga.

In the 50s of the last century, many wooden structures - masterpieces of Russian architecture - were transported to the "Kostroma Sloboda". Due to the construction of the Gorky hydroelectric power station on the Volga several villages were under the threat of flooding and in order to save the most valuable monuments - they were transported to the Kostroma settlement.

One of the first exhibits brought is the Spaso-Preobrazhenskaya Church of the XVIII century built from the village of Spas-Vezhi. In 1955, it was installed on the territory of the Ipatiev Monastery. In addition to churches, the Museum of Wooden Architecture of Kostroma also brought outbuildings and residential buildings.
