Russia , Tatarstan, island-town Sviyazhsk
There is a green Island not far from the confluence of the Sviyaga River into the Volga, as if descended from the pages of Russian fairy tales and legends. Images of Buyan Island and a fabulous whalefish, on the back of which entire villages are located, immediately come to mind.
Sviyazhsk was founded in 1551, according to legends, the basis of the first fortress was the fortifications of the city of Perevitsk dismantled and transported from the Ryazan region. Sviyazhsk became the base of the Russian troops who offenced to Kazan. Since then, a lot of water has flowed, but Sviyazhsk has grown and developed. Temples and monasteries were built here, life was in full swing.
Now it is probably the second most popular tourist place in Tatarstan.
The pearl of Sviyazhsk is the Assumption Monastery, included in the World Heritage List. Its walls resemble a fortress, the monastery itself, founded almost 500 years ago, is active.
