The free exchange of ideas is a nuclear bomb for liberalism, it much likes sister ideology communism, can only exist in a heavily regulated and suppressed society where only the right opinions are allowed to exist, let alone become popular. The only problem is that communism had the hard power to enforce this, and was thus able to radically extend its life expectancy by doing so, liberalism only has soft power which is dependant entirely upon its legitimacy. Our rulers have no legitimacy, so any attempt at this will fail and will only create more dissent. The harder they grasp the more power slips through their fingers.
