For more than 28 years – from August 13th 1961 to November 9th 1989 – Berlin was divided by the so-called ‘Berlin Wall’. It was the symbol of German division and also of the East-West conflict. It served as a border control system of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) during the division of Germany and was built to prevent people leaving East Germany. Hence, it was virtually impossible to travel to West Germany for the majority of East German people.
On November 9th 1989, the Berlin Wall fell down. This day is therefore linked to German unity. It reminds everyone that a peaceful revolution – without violence and yet great changes – took place in Germany. That's what makes it very special.
Of course, East Germans were glad the wall came down as they wanted the opportunity to live unhindered and in freedom. Today, this issue of growing together is still a very important one in German politics and much is being done to ensure that all people in the country will benefit from the same privileges and rights.
