WhatsApp views users' private messages

WhatsApp regularly scans users' private messages, independent online publication ProPublica found out.

Moderators explore private messages, photos and videos using special Facebook and AI software. This applies to content that the company received a complaint about: fraud, spam, child pornography, the threat of a terrorist attack.

In addition to correspondence, employees have access to the user's name and photo, phone number, linked Facebook and Instagram accounts, IP address, etc.

In response to an inquiry from ProPublica, WhatsApp communications director Carl Wug said that the company's contractors in Austin and other cities are reviewing private messages to identify and block violators. The company does not consider its actions to be "content moderation".
