lay off
Meaning: If you lay someone off, you stop employing them and tell them they no longer have a job. Or, to end someone's employment, especially temporarily, because there is not enough work for them.
Examples:
The company laid off 50 workers last week, now they have no job.
Many companies aren't doing so well and they'll have to lay off some of their workers.
Most managers say the worst part of their job is when they have to lay people off.
