❖ Graphite :- ❶ Each carbon atom in graphite bonds with three | Dr. Sajid Ali
❖ Graphite :-
❶ Each carbon atom in graphite bonds with three other carbon atoms in the same plane to form a hexagonal ring structure. One of these bonds is double bond. This completes the valency of carbon.
❷ In the structure of graphite, the hexagonal planes are arranged on top of each other to form a layer structure.
❸ Due to the weak bond between two layers and the distance between them, one layer can slip on the other layer. This is the reason why graphite is used as a dry lubricant.
❹ Graphite is a good conductor of electricity due to the presence of free electrons and space between the two layers.
❺ Graphite is a dark gray colored soft material.
❻ Graphite is a smooth and slippery material.
❼ It is a shiny material.
⍟ Uses of Graphite ➜
➀ Used in graphite pencils.
➁ Works as dry lubricant.
➂ Used to make electrodes.
➃ It is used in polishing on iron objects.
➄ It is used as a moderator in nuclear nuclear furnace.
