It is easy to confuse between the authoritarian style and the authoritative style of parenting. There is nothing wrong about being strict; children and teenagers require healthy and age-appropriate limits to build healthy routines and habits, and consequences are required at times to help shape healthy behaviours in them.
The difference lies in the warmth of the relationship parents have with their children. Authoritarian parents leverage on the power they have as parents to enforce behaviours mainly through punishment, sometimes at the expense of the parent-child relationship. Authoritative parents leverage on the warmth of the relationship that they intentionally build with their children to encourage positive behaviours in them, using disciplinary measures when necessary.
