The next time a behaviour from our children threatens to trigger off a seemingly uncontrollable reaction in us, choose to listen; listen to our feelings, let the temperature dip, explain our emotions, and come back at it after they've run the course. Listen to theirs too – help them identify the emotions big and small if they are unable to, and soon they would learn to regulate, too. And that in itself is some time well-spent together between parent and child.
